On Oct. 11, 2025, over 100 3Ls (third-year law students) ran across the Camp Randall Stadium before the UW Homecoming game kickoff while carrying bowler hats and canes.
Following the longstanding tradition, 3Ls threw their canes over the goalpost. As legend goes, those who catch their canes before they touch the ground will win their first case as lawyers.
The origins of the Cane Toss seem to be lost to the mists of time. Some believe the tradition began in 1917 when Professor William Herbert "Herbie" Page joined UW Law School, though he suggested it predated his arrival. To learn more about the Cane Toss history, visit our lore page.
(From left to right) Dean Dan Tokaji, Board of Visitors Member Haben Goitom '08, Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and Associate Dean Michael States ran with the 3Ls and congratulated them as they catched their canes.
Thank you to all who joined us in the field, helping to keep the Cane Toss tradition alive.
On, Wisconsin!
